We have more than 425 volunteers who help us with every aspect of our beautiful facility, equaling more than 16,000 hours of service each year. The volunteers that donate their time are extremely important to the success of our mission. With having thousands of visitors each week the Butterfly House needs enthusiastic volunteers like you to help us bring the joy of learning about butterflies and the environment to our many visitors.

The Butterfly House has volunteer opportunities available year round. Community Service opportunities for students exist as well.

"I really enjoy making new friends among the volunteers.  I also enjoy giving out information to visitors, talking with them and watching the wonder in their faces as they enter the Conservatory." Carol, Butterfly Ambassador

Butterfly Ambassador

BH_VS Volunteers

Spend a day with butterflies at the Butterfly House! Ambassador volunteers assist guests entering and exiting the Tropical Conservatory.  You may also be stationed in the exhibit hall at an interpretive "learning cart" or table.  You will also be trained to assist guests with redeeming their "butterfly release" near the Conservatory Exit once they are purchased at the admissions desk. This is a great opportunity for volunteers who are interested in volunteering in a role that supports a wonderful guest experience but have not yet completed interpretive volunteer training. Morning and afternoon shifts are available Tuesday-Sunday.

Interpretation

Interpretation volunteers support our mission by enriching guest experience through interpretive interactions at our exhibits. Interpreters will rotate through several different areas during their shift, including our exhibit hall, native butterfly garden, and Tropical Conservatory. They will also help keep the butterflies safe as they let guests into and out of the Tropical Conservatory. We will provide training materials about all the exhibits in each area of the Butterfly House. Interpretation volunteers make every guest’s visit extraordinary. Morning and afternoon shifts are available Tuesday-Sunday. Interested volunteers must first go through our interpretive volunteer training.

Birthday Party Assistant

As a Birthday Party Assistant, you will be helping the Butterfly House education department create fun birthday party memories for our guests.  We need volunteers to assist with birthday party setup and tear-down, handing out craft and Bingo supplies, passing out food and drinks, sorting waste, helping guests with activities, greeting birthday families and their guests, and encouraging children to participate. Come help with one party or many! Morning and afternoon shifts are available on Saturdays and Sundays.

Horticulture

Work with our horticulture staff keeping the grounds beautiful and the flowers blooming! Assist in various aspects of gardening, including watering, weeding, planting, general clean-up and pruning so our grounds look lovely year round. Shifts are typically scheduled two hours before the Butterfly House opens to the public. Interested volunteers must have previous gardening experience.

Questions? Contact us at butterflyhouse@mobot.org.

Entomology

Want a more hands on experience? Volunteer side by side with our entomologists working with our butterfly and invertebrates collection. Duties include unpacking and processing butterfly shipments, feeding and caring for display and laboratory animals, exhibit upkeep and general animal husbandry. Must have a strong background or passion for biology and/or entomology.

Questions? Contact us at entolab@mobot.org.

Special Events

These opportunities are perfect for people who love working with children, but don't have a lot of time to volunteer! Our energetic special event volunteers assist with crafts, games, face painting and other fun activities! All events take place on weekends or in the evening. Come help with one event or many! This opportunity works well for volunteers who need a more flexible schedule.
