(ST. LOUIS): On Wednesday, July 24, enjoy old-fashioned entertainment and free admission to the Missouri Botanical Garden and Children’s Garden all day in honor of Henry Shaw’s 219th birthday.

“Henry Shaw” himself will be greeting guests. Look for him strolling the Garden grounds, wearing his signature black top hat, alongside other actors dressed in vintage Victorian costumes. Marvel at the skills of a wandering stilt walker, have something made just for you by a balloon artist, or have your silhouette portrait drawn by an artist. You won’t want to miss the special puppetry performance by Bob Kramer’s Marionnettes at 10 a.m., 11:30 a.m., and 1 p.m. outside on Spoehrer Plaza. Snow cones will also be available for purchase on the plaza.

New this year: The event will feature a focus on trees of the Missouri Botanical Garden. In the Children’s Garden, kids can participate in activities using tree products and hear tree stories. The Historic District will have activities involving historic furniture and trees. Docent-led tree tours will be available.

For this special day only, Garden Memberships will be 20 percent off at the Membership Services Desk.

While you are here, learn more about Garden history and our founder Henry Shaw at his country home, Tower Grove House. Open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., new exhibits tell the next chapter of the Garden’s history, sharing the life of Dr. William Trelease and his family as residents of Tower Grove House after founder Henry Shaw. See three historic, newly renovated rooms and enjoy programs for the whole family in our historic Victorian District

Garden docents will be stationed throughout the Victorian District and Tower Grove House from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to talk to visitors and share insights about the displays and gardens. Visitors to Tower Grove House will even be invited to share a birthday wish with HenryShaw on a giant birthday card!

Stop in the Stephen and Peter Sachs Museum and see the newest exhibit, Leafing Through History: The Plants That Make Paper. This is the Museum’s first interdisciplinary exhibition, which highlights the science, history and art of paper and paper-making.

Items from the Garden’s Herbarium and Peter H. Raven Library will be on display, showcasing the Garden’s important history as a leading scientific institution.

Admission will also be free for all visitors at the Butterfly House and Shaw Nature Reserve on Wednesday, July 24.
